On October 1, 2012, we’re hauling the Outstanding in the Field table up to the roof of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History for a special event to benefit a new exhibition - Food: Transforming the American Table, 1950-2000
Besides dining with a spectacular view of the National Mall, guests will get a special sneak peek at this exciting new project. Set to open in November 2012, the new Smithsonian exhibition looks at how the culture of food and wine has changed in the last half of the 20th century. The exhibition includes an 18-seat Open Table, inspired in part by Outstanding in the Field, where visitors will be invited to engage in conversations about food.
Joe Brunetti, a Smithsonian horticulturist who tends the many gardens surrounding the museum, will meet us on the terrace. From there, we’ll head to the rooftop to share a meal created by OITF’s own founding chef Jim Denevan, with ingredients and wines sourced from nearby farms in Virginia and Maryland. As the sun sets behind the Washington Monument, we’ll make a toast to America’s farmers and the culinary and winemaking pioneers who have helped forge new attitudes around how and what we eat.
A portion of the proceeds from this special Outstanding in the Field event will help fund the Smithsonian exhibition, which features Julia Child’s kitchen from her Cambridge, Massachusetts home and artifacts reflecting 50 years of change in the culture of food.
We are honored to collaborate with the curators of America’s history museum to support this exhibition about change and the American table. We invite you to celebrate FOOD and help make it happen!
